Senior Immunology Scientist
Josephine (Jo) Cox, Ph.D. has over 30 years of experience in developing and utilizing state of the art assays to support immunological monitoring for phase I through phase IIb vaccine trials.
After completing her Ph.D. and postdoctoral work in the UK, Cox was a visiting Scientist at the Laboratory of Viral Diseases at NIH. Cox next worked at the US Military HIV Research Program (MHRP) at the Walter Reed Army Institute of Research where she coordinated laboratory operations to support phase I-IIb HIV Vaccine trials in East Africa and Thailand. She joined the International AIDS Vaccine Initiative as the Director of Clinical Immunology and oversaw immunogenicity testing for multiple phase I HIV vaccine trials in the US, UK, East Africa and India. Mentoring and supporting African and Thai scientists to help advance science projects and publish manuscripts was a key passion. As the Clinical Laboratory Coordinator at the Vaccine Research Center, NIH she supported laboratory readiness and immunology testing for Chikungunya and Zika virus vaccine trials at sites across the US, Caribbean and South America. After retiring from the VRC in 2020, Cox joined the HIP/HIP as a consultant helping advise on immunological aspects of the program.
